To build a website you have a couple of options. You can either sign up with a FREE blog hosting service and build a blog. A blog is a web log, were you write about any specific topic. The most noticeable aspect of a blog is that it isn’t static. Most blogs get updated daily and therefore develop a chronological order of content. On the other side, you have your normal website which is normally static. That means a website is built and then left as is for most of the time. Sometimes you might go in there and update some information. With a website you will have to purchase a hosting account from one of the many providers. It doesn’t really matter which one you choose and they range in pricing. A website can be hosted from as cheap as $5/months and comes with many added features, such as free website building templates, incorporated blogs, forums, shopping carts and much more.
So the first choice you will have to make, is to decide whether you want a simple free blog, or a hosted website with much more space and bandwidth. Please be aware that blogging platforms such as WordPress don’t allow you to place any adverts onto your blog. So if you are considering Google Adsense, Affiliate Programs, ClickBank, PayDotCom etc. on your blog, you might have to look elsewhere. Make sure you read the small print before building your blog with the chosen provider, as this can save you much time in the long run.
The widest known FREE blogging platforms are WordPress, Blogger, BraveNet, LiveJournal, Blogster and many more. If you are looking for a PAID blogging service, you might want to look at TypePad, Blog or WordPress.Org
There are literally dozens of blog providers on the internet and the best way to find a suitable one, is to browse through the options and then choose one based on design and features.
If however you made the decision to build a hosted website instead, you will need a few essential tools besides your provider. These are: A website Editor like Notepad on your computer, Mozilla’s SeaMonkey Composer or any other you prefer. Further you will need FTP Software (FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol, which is a way of copying files from your computers hard drive to the internet.) A couple of good ones are FileZilla from Mozilla, Smart FTP, CuteFTP.
Most of these tools are free to download from the internet. Depending on what style of website you want to build, you will maybe want to download a web site template to your computer to design the site to. If you want to design your site from scratch, you will need to learn basic and intermediate html. Which is coding language for the internet.
Once you have these key items, you can get started with the web site building process. You will need to open the “editor” you downloaded and build your site within. If you are not sure, how to do this, then click on the help button or do an online search on the topic. Once you are happy with your design, you will need to copy this into your FTP client and connect such to your cPanel (Admin of your website. You will be provided via email with the exact access details from your hosting provider, once you have signed up). The FTP client will allow you to upload your chosen files to your website via your cPanel (admin of your website).
Your website host will provide you with the exact details of how to log on using FTP.
