Do You Run Your Business With A Road Map?

Posted by Monika in Freelance Writing Ar... | 04.25.2007 - 6:58 pm

Are you on track for your targets? Do you know, how much money you are spending and making in your business? Have you got an operations statement written down?

If you answered no to the above questions, it might be in order to get serious. By running a business without an road map, you will run the serious risk of not only wasting time, but also resources and money. It’s like trying to run a train without tracks. We need to define, what we are trying to achieve in our business by writing out an operational statement. The best way to do this is by means of writing a list of our targets. Once we note the targets, we can set down the actual machinery of getting there. You might want to look at this like you would explaining the way to your house to a friend. Giving your friend a road map makes it very possible for your friend to find your house. It’s much the same in a business. If we don’t have a road map, we will get hopelessly lost. But if we do, we stand a chance to achieve what we dream about.

Once you outlined a road map, try to define stepping stones to the actual target. After all, you can’t run a marathon if you never trained before. In business you will need to go step by step => to go forward. Once you do this you will gain momentum. Momentum has the ability to quickly gather (like a snowball) and pull you and your business toward success.

How to create a business road map :

  • Create a list of all you want to achieve in your business - try to incorporate short term, mid term and long term goals
  • Once you have the outline, take all your terms and drill them down further. Say you want to have a certain income by months 6 in business; create a spreadsheet with months 1-6 and write down action steps you are prepared to take in order to get you to this specific goal.
  • Your goal needs to be realistic at all times and factor in what your are currently doing. It’s no good trying to burden yourself with lots of exciting activities for your business, if your lifestyle doesn’t allow you the time needed. Often less is more. If you work at working consistently bit by bit, you can achieve far more than trying to do too much at once and then ending up feeling totally overwhelmed!
  • Once you got your business road map in place and are happy with it, follow it diligently. If you ever slip, just step back on track where you left off. The biggest mistake you can make is to create a nice looking road map and all and then let it rot on your computer without ever acting on it!
