Designing Your Dream List

We are all individuals who are on a journey to some place only we know about. Or so it seems, but do you know where you are headed? Have you got a clear understanding of your desires, your wants, and your passions? If you do, then congratulations are in order. It means that you are way ahead of most people that float through life on a day to day base. It is sad really to think that many waste away their life by not having a clear picture of where they are headed. They fall prey to circumstances and get pushed this way and then that only to realize years down the track what a waste of energies this really is.

In order to get somewhere we need to first know where we are going. Imagine you are bound to go on vacation: are you planning your vacation by booking hotels, flights, trains, buses, rental car? Or do you just pack your bags and aimlessly travel around without a destination in sight? I bet it the first of these options that you choose. Much like planning a holiday, we must plan our life and what we would like to achieve. We won’t get there with wishing and hoping I can tell you. This might sound harsh, but it is the simple truth.

The first step in developing the “you” factor is to look at what you really want out of your life! This is best achieved by sitting down somewhere undisturbed and writing down everything that comes to mind. No matter how big, how long or how expensive it is to get you there, write it down if you really want it.

Once you have an acceptable list written out, you will need to break those targets into smaller bites. Look at short term, medium term and long term targets.

Short term is from now up to 1 year
Medium term is from 1-5 years
Long term is from 5 years +

As soon as you have sorted your list of dreams into those term sections try to develop some sort of action plan for each one. Break each target down into smaller achievable steps. You need to be aware that creating those dream lists will require some time. Please do not pressure yourself and take enough time to complete this. After all it is your future that is getting designed. Much like an architect designing a house you can design your own future.

As it happens with goals, you will need to re-arrange them sometimes, as not every goal can be achieved in the time frame given. This is perfectly ok and you shouldn’t be alarmed by this. It happens to all of us. Simply re-assign another date of achievement for the future and work at it.

This brings us to the biggest mistake most people make when they design a dream list or dream board. They fail to take action!
You can have the prettiest of dream boards sitting in your office. But by looking at it and gazing at it, nothing will happen. You need to act! Without action nothing will happen. The sooner you understand this and act on it, the better chance you have at achieving your dream list! I wish you that your dreams will come true! Get into action NOW!
