Copywriting to Success
For those of you who have ever constructed a sales page trying to stick to the copywriting laws of success know how frustrating it can be to get it right. Initially we tweak and tumble the site from being too long, too short, too bare, too stuffed, and many other things. Selling is an art. It is an art that requires full knowledge of marketing and human motivation factors. Another aspect of selling is the writing routine. The more we write, the better our copy will be. For all I know it might even be beneficial to study psychology to understand what drives humans to buy things. Understanding psychology will make us a better copywriter.
But before you run off to book your psychology or copywriting course you might want to read on. The powers of copywriting are very strong but oh so subtle. When we are conjuring up a design for a sales page, we only have one chance at converting our visitor into a sale. This chance occurs right in the first 10 seconds or so. If we fail to grab our visitor’s attention, he will be gone in an instant. Goodbye forever.
So how can we become masters at copywriting ourselves? Do we have to spend hundreds of $ on a copywriting course? Or should we seriously think of getting a PHD in psychology? Certainly not! Sure, it would help if we did exactly that, but it isn’t necessary for success. Instead you can study your competition. The best freelance writers don’t necessarily make great copywriters; those that make a killing on the Internet. Even offline marketing reveals to to watchers many factors of human motivation; not to forget the media. Instead of switching off those annoying TV ads, study them. You will learn to see patterns and hints. You will start to recognize what drives people to rip out their valets in a frenzy and it will help you in your own business to make sales.
A good idea is to start a collection of swipe files. Swipe files are files you collect of headlines and other copy that stand out to you when you browse the Internet or read the newspaper. You can collect headlines, sub – heads or sales pages in general. Study what others do and learn from them. It will ease your own personal road to copywriting success and turn you into a better marketer.
