Tracking Hits

I confess that since being able to implement Google Analytics and Crazy Egg into my stats, I am fascinated by them. What I found is that my traffic spikes between 4 AM and 5 AM. Maybe all the sleepless ghosts of the darkness are frequenting the Internet at night. What I’m not too sure about is whether those times are actually U.S.times (as my hosting is over there) or Australian times. Logically I would guess that they are in fact in the U.S.

The biggest amount of traffic is indeed received from the U.S. market. I suppose I could just keep looking at them stats until whenever, but there is a reason behind my madness.

I do this to find patterns of habit. Once I learn on what posts create more traffic than others, I will be able to drive even more traffic to this site. Also the time of my posting matters as sometimes the visits from social networking sites increase heaps.

Tracking stats is a game. But a game that should be taken serious by any aspiring marketer. It’s like reading body language when talking to somebody else. But online we don’t have this luxury except for live video broadcasting. So the next best thing is to track our stats and see what we can learn from the behavior of our visitors.

So what do I look for when I look at my Stats:

  • How many daily visitors I get and whether this number is actually increasing
  • How long my visitors stay on the site
  • How many page views I get per visitor
  • What was the referring website (this will give a good indication of what I need to keep doing)
  • How many people book mark my site (direct address)
  • How many returning visitors I have

These are the main points I’m trying to understand and analyze. I have noticed that I have more subscribers than when I first started. Also people seem to comment more frequently. I really love to hear from anybody who visits this blog and when others like you comment, it makes me happy as I must have struck a chord within you somewhere.

The programs I use for this is a combination of Awstats which is part of my hosting’s  c-panel, Google Analytics and now Crazy Egg as I love their heat map. In the end it really doesn’t matter what program you use. If you have a free blog, then maybe you might look at getting something like Free Stats instead.

What is it you do? Do you also track your own stats? If yes, how often and what programs do you use? I want to hear from you! Your opinion matters.

Take care

Monika
