Do You Have Membership to The Writers Gym?

Posted by Monika in Writing, ... | 01.21.2008 - 9:37 pm

Are you a member of the writers gym? If you are, then you know too well how to tone your writers muscles. Writers muscles are like a body builders biceps. We build them actively using our brain and using it often. Writers who struggle with their flow of writing and their grammar need a membership to the writers gym.

I’m a member of the writers gym myself and without it I wouldn’t know how I would be able to stay muscled up to get work.

writers gym

Ok, the above paragraph was all made up. There is no writers gym, but there certainly are writers muscles (others call it our brain). I guess what I’m trying to say is that unless you write often, you will struggle with all sorts of things. It could be grammar, ideas, inspiration, desire, passion or lack of want. I think you know by now that passion for the cause (whatever that might be) is essential to your own success but it isn’t enough.

Unless we exercise our passion nothing happens. Think soccer players, musicians, actors. Much like them we as writers need to stay active to keep growing and the only way to do this is to keep writing.

I think I mentioned in an earlier post that I write some 3,000 to 5,000 words daily. This would include all my own blogs, my clients blogs and all my other freelance clients.

Writing is my writers gym! By writing daily I am improving my skills all the time and I would be wrong to think that because others tell me I write well I reached a certain level and that’s it.

Maybe when I get paid $75 an hour I might think this, but then I am not the person who stays still and stop growing, so it won’t happen. I thrive on learning new things every day and the pay off for me is when I acquire new knowledge that I can use to implement into my business.

My membership to the writers gym allows me to practice my skills, improve them and at the same time become more known in the blogosphere. For me it is a business plan and nothing else.

Partially branding - partially networking and all with a big pinch of hard work and long hours, throw in tons of fun and excitement as well as happiness and that is my recipe for a successful future.

What is your recipe? I’d love to know, maybe we can bake a cake together one day.

Hi Monika - that’s a lot of writing. I make myself write at least 1000 words of my novel each day. But, I never stopped to count other things, including blogposts - although I should.

The advice you give is sound though. To improve your writing, you need to write every single day.

Catherine: writing a novel sounds like a huge long term project. How do you get back into the flow of things after stopping every day? I’m not sure whether I would loose my trail of thoughts, even with notes and all.

Your recipe sounds pretty identical to mine. It’s a great life and the writer’s gym is the only one I can get myself to on a regular basis. ;-)

*gets confused* Why are there two email follow up checkboxes? Should I click both or would that send me two emails per comment?

Hi Rebecca,

I’m the same. Normal gyms don’t do it for me, only the writers gym does. :-)

As for the two email check boxes, that is strange since I can only see one at my end. Not sure why that is. Perhaps somebody else might be able to comment on this.

I practice a similar method I know whether I want to continually enhance my writing skills; I will need to put in the time and exercise.

Do I think I’ll get to the point where I don’t need the writer’s gym? No, I still go to the regular gym even though I’m considered to be in great shape, I see professional athletes still working out often to enhance their physical skills. In order, to stay on top I’ll need to continually work on enhancing my writing.

I’m only seeing one comment box.

Opal: welcome and thank you for your comment. You are so right, even if we are good at something we need to keep practicing.

I see myself like a martial arts writer were the pen is my weapon. :-)
