However, nothing would stop you from asking for a pay. You could offer to do the work for a special price and perhaps mention that you need to get paid for your time as well. If you can convey to your existing "clients" that they will be saving money by not having to go a full charging freelance writer they might well be happy to take you up on the offer. I'd say give it a shot and be honest to them on why you can't be doing the work for free forever.
