I wanted to keep you guys in the loop why my blog suddenly lost comments and the latest posts over the last three days. It has been a frustrating experience, especially since I was just raving about my host so much and then this happens.
LOL, serves me right for bragging (ok I wasn’t). What happened is that I upgraded this site to sit on a reseller account. This means more bandwidth and less chances of getting banned by sharing an IP address with a spammer.
I got the guys at Hostgator to do all the work for me and in the process they must have copied an outdated backup to my new server (e.g. before I posted the last two posts).
Luckily for me I had backups of either and just re-published the lot after waiting a few days. I was hoping the folks would do that for me, but this wasn’t so, so another lesson learned.
Never rely on others!
I’m still learning to get around in my new account and will probably do so in months to come. As I said before, I’m not a tech geek and while I can comfortably find my way around WordPress and code within (or mostly so) I am lost when it comes to servers and all the stuff.
So, while I do have a backup of the latest comments, I have no idea on how to actually just backup my comment.php file so I’ll have to get the guys at Hostgator to do this for me when they got some time.
Anyway, if you recently commented like Kelly, Brett and the others I can’t recall at this stage (gee, my mind is full of holes), my apologies for this stuff up.
Hopefully it can get fixed over time.
Monika

Hi Monika,
No worries! Technology is both the cause of, and the solution to, many of life’s problems. Call it the digital equivalent of my kids flushing my Moleskine down the toilet… not that they’ve done this… yet…
I’ll just throw in an extra comment or two about virtual flat whites to make up for it
(PS - here’s a virtual flat white for you!)
I hope you are well today - talk with you soon,
Brett
@ Brett: thanks buddy, you are a true friend for rescuing my comment section. LOL. Thanks for the virtual flat white. Although it is late, I’m still keen to drink it.
Hehe…you wouldn’t want that Moleskine go down the toilet, they are too nice to be lost that way. I’m addicted to my two and have hacked one into a calendar actually. Works a treat!
@ Monika: hey, that’s what friends are for! And that’s another reason why we need to move to NZ, so that my clock will be in sync with yours and I won’t be offering up insomnia-inducing beverages late at night…
Oh, I had a nice memory last night. I was enjoying a Steinlager with dinner, and while looking at the label on the bottle, I remembered walking past the brewery last August while lost on a stroll in Auckland.
I want to do that again soon.
I agree, I’d hate to see a Moleskine go out that way. They deserve a full military funeral at least, with 21 gun salute LOL
@ Brett: LOL, see that your coffee has done to me. It is now 1:17AM and I’m still up. Been designing a new WordPress theme for a client. Great fun.
Loved that military salute funeral
@ Monika: I’m an evil influence, I can’t help it… LOL
Not sure if you’re still up now, but when that new theme goes live, let me know as I’d love to see it!
@ Brett: it is live and I’ll send you the URL in a minute via email. I played around with html and colors and think it looks pretty nifty anyway. But you’ll be the judge.
You can be my guinea pig judge. LOL.
Hey and you are not evil, just tongue in cheek and that is why we get on like a house on fire.
@ Monika: I’m sure it looks wonderful, and I can’t wait to see it
Just call me “GP”
very true, my friend (*raises flat white in honour of you*)
Hey! I just found your site from somewhere else out there on the google. I really like your design and overall theme. It stands out a bit from all the other writing and freelance blogs, which of course is exactly what you want.
I have also had a couple technical problems in getting started over the last 45 days– the site was down for a whole day when I was in India thanks to a bad comment plug-in, for example. But hopefully those issues will not be frequent for either of us.
Keep up the good writing; I’ll check in from time to time.
@ Chris: nice to see you stop by. Thanks for the comment on my theme. I’m actually pondering a make over. LOL. Never mind, it’s good to see that some people like it after all. Had some other input too.
I quickly checked out your site and am intrigued by the country hop on there. Might have to check this one out further.
Thanks! And by theme, I meant overall theme of the site: your purpose, subject matter, posts, etc. Design is obviously a part of that, but lots of sites have great designs (WP themes or whatever) but no compelling reason to come back. It seems you have the compelling reason, and that is most important.
@ Chris: aah, forgive my slowness. I got you know. Yes, I suppose content does matter a lot and it is always great to hear from my readers (people like you) that they enjoy reading my blog.
Kind of makes it all worthwhile anyway. From the moment go I wanted to provide useful information that actually helps people in some way or another.
The best part about my readers is that many have become regulars and I’m getting to know all these cool bloggers from all around the world.
Hey that reminds me, who is going to be in Vegas in September? Blogging Expo here I come. Wooohooo…
Monika, stuff like this happens all the time and it seems it happens to people like us more often than others, I promise you when this is over you will look back on it and think , damn I wasted too much time fretting about that. My new related post plug is in finally in , thanks to that guy who lives in Puerto Rico, whats his name again? See ya soon my friend
@ Don: Yeah, I’m already over it. I admit though it did upset me in the first three days as losing blog posts and comments isn’t fun. However, you would know a lot more about that, so I shall “shaddap” for ever.
I’ll have top stop over and check out your post too.
Hi Monika,
I got over here, finally today, been hopping in and out of family chores. I sure understand about not being a techie, I am the WORST!
No worries, loyal friends, standing by!
@ Wendy: Family chores, sounds like fun, hehehe…. hope it wasn’t cleaning related (my worst nightmare)
Great to see you back here and like you, I’m lucky with my loyal friends too as they have helped me in countless situations before. I’d like to call it karma going round.
Hi Monika,
This is a bit scary… my account (it’s already a reseller account but not with HG) is about to be moved to new hardware this Friday. I only have 12 sites on it but a couple are really important to keep up. Hope it works (touches wood).
It’s almost 6pm so here’s a virtual XXXX & some Kettle chips.
Mark
@ Mark: hope that beer was nice last night.
Gee, I love beer myself and have to stop drinking so much as it isn’t particularly good for the old figure.
Yes, those tech things can become quite a worry if one doesn’t know what exactly is going on.
Apparently they did the move while I was still blogging to the old blog. Although it beats me how this works, since when the DNS has propagated it should automatically move over anyway.
But then, what do I know about all this hosting stuff. LOL. Hope your move will go smoothly enough.
I encourage you to make a current backup of each of your site to your hard drive and maybe to the server too in case things do go wrong. At least your host can then figure things out with this if need be.
@ Monika, if you counter each beer with a flat white, it negates the calories in the beer. Or so I’ve been told
(Ask John.)
@ Brett: LOL, that sounds like it could be fun, even though the two don’t really go together do they? I already had my coffee intake for today in the offline world and all I can stomach now is virtual stuff.
@ Monika: you need something to cleanse the palate between swigs, kind of like the pickled ginger when eating sushi…
besides the beer gods would be angered. I haven’t figured it out yet, but I’ll keep you posted
Hi Monika,
Nice blog you got going there, I got here from a comment you left on Blogger Unleashed, how is the thing you’re working on going?
Anyway, Are you interested in backing up the comments left on the blog, or just the comment template? your comments are saved in MYSQL database, while your comment form design & template is the comment.php file.
If you need more help with backing up feel free to contact me by email, I faced these kind of hickups myself when I first started, it surely is frustrating.
Cheers,
Allen
@ Allen: thanks for the offer. I might need your help I wouldn’t mind learning this MySQL stuff as I never use it myself.
It is the actual comments I want to back up since some went lost in the move. I’m pretty cool with my admin fields and know most of the stuff in there to make changes.
But I’m lost when it comes to looking at tables in MySQL and stuff as I never use it.
