Online Whispers … People Of Earth

Posted by Monika in Freelance Writing-Bl... | 05.21.2008 - 10:15 pm

image Michael Martine wrote a thought provoking post on social media and how it helps bloggers to grow their blogs. His post lead me back to a site I visited many moons ago and I’m thankful it did, since I found this very powerful quote on the Cluetrain Manifesto.

…People of Earth

The sky is open to the stars. Clouds roll over us night and day. Oceans rise and fall. Whatever you may have heard, this is our world, our place to be. Whatever you’ve been told, our flags fly free. Our heart goes on forever. People of Earth, remember.

This very quote has struck a powerful chord within me, since it is the people of earth that accompany me throughout my journey on this planet. While I work from home, all by myself, I’m never really alone, thanks to the people of earth.

Online whispers and murmurs all everywhere we listen. Just stop over at your favourite blog and see what type of whispers take place there. Brett wrote about the forever people, which is a very lovely homage to his childhood hometown and the people who once were.

Tei has whispered about her house in the middle of the street and Friar posted his never to do list. These are people of the earth who bring sunshine into my heart by making me smile, knowing that I’m not alone.

While Lea is in transit and perhaps a little grumpy (which by the way I find hard to believe) between her travels around the world, James confessed to the world that he is not Canadian.

These people too are people of the earth. Even though they are all scattered across the globe I couldn’t feel more close to them if I was in the same room. Why? Because these people whisper in my language. They whisper ideas, thoughts, inspiration and stories that touch me on some primeval level.

Sharon whispered freelance does not mean free, while Kathy says screw you!

Remember, we are all people of earth and with blogging we come together on the same platform, singing the same songs and dancing the same dances our ancestors have done, only on a different level.

Thanks for the link, Monika. I’ve found a couple of posts I missed as well. :)

@ Sharon: you are welcome. I loved your post on the “why freelance doesn’t mean free” issue. I have grumbled with the same thoughts.

That is why I linked to Kathy’s blog too because she mas managed to take the mickey out of all those offers and it makes me laugh.

It does get lonely writing. The life of a writer is lonely, but we have eachother to connect to.

Sometimes it seems even more so because the Net seems so ephemeral.

But in the past I would never have been able to connect to someonen in Australia! I suppose there is pros and cons to all connections.

@ Ellen: yes you are so right. I’m always quite amazed at how easy it is to connect with each other. When we feel lonely we can simply chat at the drop of a button.

I call it the convenience factor. :-)

Aww…shucks. I’m glad I bring sunshine to your life. (Even if I’m a bit of a wing-nut!)

You wonder, how in the world did lonely writers ever survive before the Internet?

Maybe that’s why so many ended up insane or with drinking problems! :-)

@ Friar: hell yes you do. You crack me up with your marvelous entertaining writing and cartoons.

Drinking problems aren’t just reserved for writers though. I know a many chefs who have the same problem and then there are the trillions of others who do too.

Monika,

Thanks for a nice round-up today, like Sharon, I missed a couple of these posts.

We are very lucky to be able to meet and interact with like-minded people from around the globe, no matter what time it is I can always talk with a friend.

And that is a beautiful quote. Thanks for sharing that today.

@ Brett: no worries mate. :-) Like you I also treasure these times and moments as if it wasn’t for them I’d probably flee from my desk. LOL, just kidding.

But joking aside, writing is often lonely and that is one reason why I love having my birds so much. They keep me company, they entertain me with their individual characters and they allow me to love them which makes me all gooey inside.

Oh my, seems that I’m a real softy after all.

@Monika,

Of course you’re a softy ;) just like me, and Friar too (he is, really).

I expect one day once the kids have left home to have a big, stinky dog to keep me company while I write. I’ll put my bare feet on the dog!

@ Brett: stinky dog? LOL. Make sure he is the right height, so that your feet will sit in a straight line when you sit down.

Poor doggie.

@Monika,

We had the perfect one before (may she rest in peace), her name was Daisy and she was a really “fragrant flower” :) 95 pounds of stinky Black Lab!

You could rest your feet on her and she didn’t mind. I miss her, she was my buddy.

Time for another one, I think…

LOL!! If you want to know how grumpy I’ve been, ask Jonathan (the husband) who has had to sit next to me moaning with a “face like a sour lemon” for a 7 hour flight today!!

You’re right though…even gadding about the globe like we do and being in strange, foreign places, I never feel far from friends online - like you - who provide support and inspiration :-)

@ Lea: you, grumpy? Oh my…* she gasps in utter disbelief*

I do find that hard to believe you know, since you are always so upbeat and chirpy, but then we all do have our down days, don’t we. Poor Jonathan, hope you gave him a good cuddle afterwards. LOL.

When I have my “lemon” times I always crack up afterwards because of the irony in it all. Especially if John feels the brunt of it all. Hehehehe…. it always reminds me of the Mars vs Venus book and how silly we can get (especially us ladies) when we are grumpy.

Being too tired is what makes me grumpy so I actually understand why you were too. :-)

Monika, I like the way you wove all those links together–very nice!

Cluetrain changed my life. That’s no exaggeration.

@ Michael: Glad you did. Thanks to you I found the site again and now I have it bookmarked for further reference.

I saw them months ago and never went back (forgot all about it). By the sounds of it though I need to spend a lot more time there and see what it really is all about.

Cluetrain grabbed my brain too, and is the inspiration for my own online ventures. I keep reading it over and over and keep finding new insights.
Thanks for the great content here!

So true Monika,

As we sit quietly and write, a cyberspace friend is never more than a click away. Oh how lovely, this world of blogging.

@ Barbara: it is, isn’t it. I love it for all it’s worth and wouldn’t go back to the offline world of bitching, managers who don’t have a clue on how to handle staff and long hours.

I take being lonely occasionally any day, plus I have all you lot to chat with, so that is reason enough to keep going.

I learned over a decade ago that the virtual world was a welcoming one and that I could find people that spanned the globe. Many are still my friends years later.

My world has no boundaries - and that’s how it should be.

Thank you for the link, and that was a very nice read.

@ James: pleasure. I appreciate you stopped by on your no doubt busy schedule. :-) Wow, a decade and more of Internet. I think I barely learned how to use the computer then. Amazing how fast we have come though when I think back to the first laptop I had. Cost me a fortune then and Internet for me back in those days was unheard off.

Guess I’m a late starter then.

Don’t worry about the loud ones, if you need them, they’ll come to you too. Thanks for taking the time to comment.

Hi Monika,
This is my first time to visit this site and i’m glad I had read your post. I am strongly on your side about these online whispers. Internet gives a way for everyone’s opinion and feelings…I’m longing to read more from you. Your a good writer, I can say. I salute you for that :-).

@ Patricia: wow, I love getting compliments. Don’t we all anyway. So thank you very much for those nice words. It’s great to see you stopped by on your travels through cyber space.

I have a question for you; maybe you can enlighten me about the fact that you posted your comment as Patricia linking to a James website. LOL. Is that your other half? I’m confused.
