I don’t quite fit the personality type to make a living writing but I was impressed with how many of your points can be applied to self-employment of any sort. Sacrifice, discipline and flexibility are all important to many of us.

@ Carla: Hmmm…never underestimate yourself! You’d be surprised how much you can do if you put the energy behind it. If you are passionate about writing, then give it a go. Who knows where it will lead you?

After reading this, I don’t think I am suited to freelance writing! While I can juggle multiple tasks, and work solidly though an entire day, etc, I don’t think I have the writing skill for it. Its so competitive out there and there are a lot of great writers!

@ Laurie PK: Your are welcome Laurie. I loved your article about the topic and felt obliged to link to you. Welcome to my blog. I love seeing new people and connecting with them. You made some good points in your comment. My last post actually touches on that subject because I had to get over my declining business for awhile which was hard because it was the first time since I’ve been in that situation. Up until then people came to me without me doing much which was great.

Learning that the world does indeed not turn around me was frustrating at first, but then very refreshing and liberating. I guess I’ve matured in that regard myself. In the end you have to. It’s either sink or swim isn’t it?

Thanks for linking to my article about a writer’s personality — you really do need to have certain qualities if you’re gonna keep freelancing!

I’m also learning that maturity is a huge factor. By that, I mean that freelance writers need to be able to ride the waves without drowning in multiple assignments, or freaking out in despair if it’s been awhile between jobs. Sometimes freelancing is busy as hell; other times, it’s so quiet that you think you’ll never work again. Gotta learn to surf!

Maybe the maturity I’m talking about isn’t a personality trait as much as a characteristic of any successful entrepreneur….you gotta take the ebbs and flows of work in stride.

Yup, totally suited to my personality. I like the rapid adaptation, though I’m not too crazy about the required patience. I am getting better at it though.
