Hey Trina,

Great to see you here! I totally agree. It is WAY hard to turn off the instinct. I love doing editing but my inner writer will always prevail!

Hey, George...refreshing look at editing. I once found myself looking at the draft of a vampire novel that I was considering editing. I actually wound up not doing the work, but I was happy with that because I would have had to constantly remind myself not to basically re-write the thing. We writers work so hard to put so much of ourselves into every piece we write. It is very hard to turn that instinct off just because you take of the 'writer' hat and put on the 'editor' hat. Inspired topic, insightful writing.

Very interesting piece, George. I have great difficulty holding the hatchet at bay when copy editing. It's very difficult when you know something could be phrased more powerfully or succinctly. The problem is when you're asked to copy edit and create new writing at the same time; like when you're expanding an ebook. Sticking in whole new blocks of writing and getting them to match what's already there is tough. Honestly, I just write as I write, and try and tidy the rest so there's not too much disparity. It's what I was saying in my last blog about the writer's voice - trying to sound like someone else can stifle creativity.

Adios amigo!

Hi Chris,

Wow it's interesting that you landed that as one of your first gigs. Sounds like it was a good experience for you as well. Yuppers, it can be hard to keep original voice on these kinds of projects.

Cheers

That was actually one of my first freelance projects. I had to edit an ebook that was transcribed from a speech the client did. That was interesting to say the least. I basically just had to make sure it sounded like a book and not a speech and correct a few errors.

Anyways, ya it was interesting to have to step out of my own shoes for a bit to make sure it stayed in the clients voice. Cool post :).
